Announcement: Mister Rogers 50th Anniversary Celebrated in a Stamp and MORE!!!

It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood indeed with this week commemorating what would have been the 90th birthday of Mister Fred Rogers! To honor Pittsburgh’s best and brightest hero, the U.S. Postal Service is issuing forever stamps TODAY showcasing the gentle TV host in his trademark cardigan with King Friday at his side.

Not only are we honoring Mister Rogers, but also his long loved children’s show Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood which celebrated it’s 50th anniversary on PBS this year. His legacy of kindness, love, and acceptance touched all his ‘television friends’ and especially those in the Pittsburgh region who were lucky enough to meet him in person.
David Newell aka Mr. McFeely

It's a sentiment echoed by David Newell, who popped in to make "speedy deliveries" as cheerful postman Mr. McFeely throughout the series' 31-season run.

"This is the year of Fred," Newell says. "The program has really resonated — it's very rewarding. People in their 50s now are the first generation that watched the Neighborhood, and it goes all the way down to teens. It's four generations (of fans)."  Check out Mr. Newell in this interview below:

Fred Rogers and Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood

Pittsburgh's own WQED aired the first episode of Mister Rogers Neighborhood on February 19, 1968. A young Fred Rogers entered the living rooms of children to teach them about caring, kindness and the value of being true to yourself - a message he would continue to deliver over nearly 900 episodes and 33 years.
The Mr. Rogers Exhibit Courtesy of the Pittsburgh International Airport

Mister Rogers is being honored in many ways this year, including the Pittsburgh International Airport where today travelers can view the Trolley and Daniel Striped Tiger from the Land of Make Believe along with his trademark red cardigan sweater and sneakers in a display that can be viewed in the Airside Terminal Center Core. Visitors can also share memories of Mister Rogers on a large chalkboard, have refreshments, and pick up free buttons and red shoelaces from employees wearing red cardigans. Also, travelers who want to pick up some of those forever stamps can do so at the post office in Concourse D.

Fans of the show can also visit the set of Mister Rogers Neighborhood by heading to the Heinz History Center in the Strip District. Mr. Rogers living room, King Friday’s Castle and the Great Oak Tree are just some of the familiar set pieces you can check out.

Also on the horizon is the new documentary being released in theaters on June 8th called Won’t You Be My Neighbor that features a retrospective on the life, lessons, and legacy of the iconic children’s performer. The documentary will feature interviews with those involved in the creation of the children’s television series, including producer Margy Whitmer, who quips, “You take all of the elements that make good television, and do the exact opposite — you have ‘Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood’….yet, it worked.” Others interviewed in the trailer include Elizabeth Seamans, who played Mrs. McFeely, and Francois Clemmons, who played Officer Clemmons. Check out the trailer below:

Won't You Be My Neighbor (2018 Trailer / Focus Features)

If that isn’t enough, it was also recently announced that Tom Hanks will be portraying Fred Rogers in a new movie entitled You Are My Friend directed by Marielle Heller with the story largely focused on a reporter who is at a critical point in his life - becoming a new father, having issues with his own father and meeting Mr. Rogers to write a piece about him, thinking it’s going to be a bit of a puff piece, but it ends up changing his entire life. The story is still in the development stage, but great news for fans who can’t get enough of Mr. Rogers.
Fred Rogers Tribute to Children Monument Courtesy of Hot Toddy

Now that warmer weather is finally on the way, the gang from good ol’ PU encourages all of you to check out one of our favorite spots in the city, the Mister Rogers ‘Tribute to Children’ Monument located on the North Shore overlooking the Allegheny River at the former Bridge pier near Heinz Field.

The 7,000-pound memorial, opened in 2009, showcases an 11-foot bronze statue of Mister Rogers sitting down and tying his sneakers, as he did at the beginning of each episode of his show that was created by the late sculptor Robert Berks whom Fred Rogers was an admirer of. The monument also features sound clips of Mister Rogers timeless wisdom allowing his words of kindness, encouragement, and understanding to live on. Trust us - if you’re ever feeling down, one trip to this Pittsburgh landmark will bring a smile to your soul to make you instantly feel better.

For more on Mister Rogers, check out the Fred Rogers Company Website for news, merchandise, and wonderful memories of our favorite neighbor.

FRED ROGERS' FRIDAY BONUS!!! Check out the wise words of Fred Rogers' below as he appeared before the United States Senate in 1969 to defend public television from budget cuts. President Richard Nixon had proposed slashing funding for programming such as Rogers’ in half as the war in Vietnam raged on. Tits For Telly: Stranger Things 2 STARTS TODAY on Netflix!!!

Greetings all you ghouls and fools! The wait is finally over and just in time for the Halloween weekend as Stranger Things Season 2 starts TODAY for your binging pleasure on Netflix!!! Check out the trailer below!

Stranger Things 2 (2017 Trailer / Netflix)

Created, written, and directed by the Duffer Brothers (Matt and Ross), we revisit our favorite time period - the 1980’s, as more otherworldly mayhem ensues in Hawkins, Indiana as the ‘Upside Down’ isn’t finished with our main heroes Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard), Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo), Lucas Sinclair, (Caleb McLaughlin), and Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) who was missing in the aforementioned ‘Upside Down’ for most of the first season only to return at the end, but now with a mysterious connection to this bizarro universe.

Also returning is Will’s big brother Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) his mother Joyce (Winona Ryder), Jonathan’s crush Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer) and her boyfriend Steve Harrington (Joe Keery). Also returning is Police Chief Jim Hopper (David Harbour) who was found dropping off Eggo waffles in the woods in the last episode of season 1 for our telekinetic heroine Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) who has been missing after the events of last year (don’t worry - she’s back too)!

Linnea Berthelsen, Sean Astin, and Paul Riser join Stranger Things 2

Joining is the cast is Goonie legend Sean Astin as a Bobby Newby, a former schoolmate of both Joyce and Hooper and rumored boyfriend of poor Joyce, who after last season, needs a little happy in her life. Chances are that this love triangle between her, Bobby, and Hooper will only complicate her world further as we find out what’s happened to Will this season. Paul Reiser will also be joining the fun, playing Owens, a Department of Energy executive tasked with containing the events of last season. Danish actress Linnea Berthelsen will be playing Roman who's described as "an emotionally damaged, magnetic young woman who suffered a great loss as a child. Although she does not live in Hawkins, she is mysteriously connected to the supernatural events at the lab".

Dacre Montgomery and Sadie Sink join Stranger Things 2

Finally, joining the kids is tomboy Max (portrayed by Sadie Sink) and her big brother Billy (played by Power Rangers star Dacre Montgomery) who’s been described as one of the ‘human villains’ of the show - steals girlfriends away from boyfriends, great at drinking games, and drives a black Camaro (a very 80’s villain indeed!).

What About Barb?

The one thing on most minds of most fans is ‘what about Barb”? Barb Holland (portrayed by Shannon Purser), became quite the sensation after her character was killed off by one of the creepy crawlies of the Upside Down.

Matt Duffer stated that although she won’t be back for season 2,  “Barb will not be forgotten. We’ll make sure there’s some justice for Barb. People get very frustrated, understandably, that the town doesn’t seem to be really dealing with Barb. That stuff is all happening. We’re just not spending any screen time on it. Season One actually takes place over the course of six or seven days – it’s a really short period of time,” he explained. “So part of what we want to do with hypothetical Season 2 is to explore the repercussions of everything that happened.”

Stranger Things 2 starts TODAY on Netflix so grab your favorite Halloween candy, turn off the lights, and binge those sweet nightmares!!!

Tits For Telly: It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown TONIGHT ON ABC!!!

Tonight’s the night to grab your blanket, and head out to your nearest pumpkin patch! It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown airs tonight, October 19th at 8:00 PM TONIGHT on ABC !!!

This Charles Schulz classic was produced and animated by the legendary Bill Melendez (who also provided the voices for both Snoopy and Woodstock) and features Linus, Sally, Lucy, Violet, Schroeder, Pig-Pen, Patty, Snoopy, and of course Charlie Brown. The special originally aired in 1966 on CBS, with ABC picking up the rights in 2001. Check out this original trailer!

It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown
(1966 Promo Trailer)

This timeless Halloween special also marks the first time that the world saw Snoopy dressed in full aviator attire in search of 'The Red Barron'. Snoopy first assumed the guise of the World War I Flying Ace in a Peanuts comic strip from October 1965, donning vintage aviator hat, scarf, and goggles to take on the Red Baron from atop his doghouse.

The concept came to Schulz after a discussion he had with his son, Monte, about the Red Baron. “They both had ideas about who influenced that,” Jill Schulz said of her older brother and father, referencing the fact that they both took credit for inventing flying Snoopy. It was a year later when the beagle’s alter ego made its television debut in “It’s the Great Pumpkin.”

“As we were developing the script, Mr. Schulz lamented almost as an aside, ‘Too bad we can’t have Snoopy fly,'” Mendelson recalled. “Melendez, pretending to be offended, said, ‘Hey, I’m an animator. I can do anything, including a dog flying a doghouse.’ We all laughed and that’s how Bill Melendez and [animator] Bill LittleJohn created that scene.”

Snoopy steering his doghouse through the air is now an iconic image. It appeared in subsequent animations, including The Peanuts Movie, and even became a postage stamp.

This is one of the most beloved holiday specials for those of us who are crazy about Halloween and the Peanuts gang so don't forget to tune into ABC (WTAE Channel 4 in Pittsburgh) at 8:00 PM for It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown.

Tits For Telly: The Defenders STARTS TODAY!!!

After two years of separate adventures with Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, the gang has finally banded together TODAY for The Defenders on Netflix! Check out the trailer!

The Defenders / 2017 Trailer / Marvel Comics / Netflix

Based on the 1971 Marvel comic of the same name (but ever changing roster of heroes), this live action mini series follows Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage aka Power Man (Mike Colter), Danny Rand aka Iron Fist (Finn Jones), and Matt Murdock aka Daredevil (Charlie Cox) as they team up one month after the events of Iron Fist / Season 1 to defeat villainous group known as ‘The Hand’.

The Hand has been a thorn in both Daredevil and Iron Fist’s side for a while now with Matt Murdock battling them at the end of Daredevil / Season 2 (stealing the body of his dead lady love, Elektra in the process) and caused all kinds of mayhem for Danny Rand in Iron Fist / Season 1. Now the hand is causing big trouble in New York City and the gang needs to band together to end the evil.

Joining the cast are series regulars that we know and love from all four Marvel shows including Elodie Yung (Elektra Natchios). Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page), Elden Henson (Foggy Nelson), Rosario Dawson (Claire Temple), Simone Missick (Misty Knight), Jessica Henwick (Colleen Wing), Carrie-Anne Moss (Jen Hogarth), Rachael Taylor (Trish Walker), Scott Glenn (Stick), and Wai Ching Ho (Madame Gao). Brand new to the cast is Sigourney Weaver as the mysterious Alexandra who is only described as the head of an ancient organization. Weaver described the character as "really smart", "very in charge", and more of an adversary than a villain.

Marvel Feature #1 / The Defenders / 1971 - Marvel Comics

The Defenders first appearance was in written by Roy Thomas in 1971 for Marvel Feature #1 with team roster led by Doctor Strange and including Hulk, Namor, and eventually the Silver Surfer. That group ran until 1986 with rotating heroes such as Valkyrie, Nighthawk, Hellcat, Gargoyle, Beast, the Son of Satan, and Luke Cage. The Defenders also went through many incarnations throughout the years including the New Defenders, The Secret Defenders, The Fearless Defenders, and even the Last Defenders.

Hopefully this won’t be the last time we see this incarnation of The Defenders and season 1 is only the start! The Defenders begins TODAY on Netflix!

Tits For Telly: MST3K IS BACK!!!

It’s Movie SIGN!!! Talk about a good Friday!!! One of our very favorite TV shows, Mystery Science Theater,  is back thanks to Netflix, both the new and old gang from the Satellite of Love, and fans that raised $6.5 million clams to make it a reality!!! Check out the trailer below!

MST3K - Season 11 (2017 Trailer)  / Netflix

For those of you who have been living in a bubble for the last few decades (it’s been around since 1988) Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K for us MSTie's) was the story of Gizmonic Institute janitor Joel Hodgson (also creator of the series) who is sent into space to live on the Satellite of Love by his bosses Dr. Clayton Forrester (Trace Beaulieu) and Dr. Laurence Erhardt (J. Elivis Weinstein) who is  eventually replaced TV’s Frank (Frank Conniff) in their underground lair called ‘Deep 13’.

MST3K - TV's Frank (Frank Conniff) and Dr. Clayton Forrester (Trace Beaulieu)

Joel is forced to watch bad movies that he has no control over in order to find the perfect B-movie to use as a weapon in Dr. Forrester’s plan for world domination. To keep his sanity, Joel builds some robot pals to interact with including Tom Servo (Kevin Murphy), Crow T. Robot (Bill Corbett), Gypsy (Jim Mallon), and Cambot (the ship recorder and announcer) who keep him company within the satellite and in the theater where they riff during the films.

MST3K - Joel Hodgson, Tom Servo, Crow T. Robot

Originally a late night local TV show produced by Jim Mallon (production manager and voice of bot Gypsy) on KTMA-TV in Hopkins, Minnesota the show eventually made it’s way to “The Comedy Channel’ or what is now Comedy Central. Mallon and Hodgson, securing the rights to their show, created Best Brains Inc., splitting the ownership of the original concept equally.

MST3K - Joel Hodgson / Mike Nelson

Although Joel had a great run between 1988 and 1993, he eventually split over disagreements with Mallon over creative control and Mallon’s insistence to create a full length feature film based on the show. Although the end for Joel, it was the beginning for Mike J. Nelson (also head writer for 11 seasons) who stepped up to play all new janitor to torture, along with Dr. Forrester’s mother Pearl (Mary Jo  Pehl) that would eventually spawn the full length feature film that Mallon had wanted, aptly titled Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie. Check out the trailer below!

MST3K: The Movie (1996 Trailer / Gramercy Pictures / Universal / Best Brains)

Eventually, MST3K jumped networks once again in 1997 to the Sci-Fi Channel (before they started calling themselves SyFy) along with Mike Nelson, his bots, Pearl, and two new characters - the simian Professor Bobo (played by Kevin Murphy) and Observer aka ‘Brain Guy’  (played by Bill Corbett) who as his name would suggest, carried his disembodied brain in a petri dish. The show lasted on SyFy until 1999 when Mike and the bots finally escaped the Satellite of Love only to move into an apartment in Minnesota to, as you may have guessed, spend their free time watching bad movies and mocking them the entire time.

MST3K - Professor Bobo (Kevin Murphy),
Observer aka Brain Guy (Bill Corbett),
and Pearl Forrester (Mary Jo Pehl)

Never fear - the monster that was MST3K did not die! During the hiatus of MST3K The cast broke off into two riffing camps. MST3K's creator, Joel Hodgson, spun off  Cinematic Titanic which ran touring engagements from 2007 to 2013, continuing the tradition of riffing on bad movies with MST3K cast members Trace Beaulieu, Frank Conniff, Mary Jo Pehl, and J. Elvis Weinstein. The Cinematic Titanic Youtube Channel still exists with some clips of their work.

Rifftraxx, launched by Mike J. Nelson in 2006 continued the riffing tradition on bad movies, but also on topical ones as well all available for purchase on the Rifftrax website by app, streaming, and downloads. Both Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett joined Mr. Nelson who also tour to theaters all over the country performing for live and streaming audiences (which can also be downloaded as well). They are still in operation today and well worth a subscription to their service!

That brings us to present day where Joel Hodgson finally reacquires the rights to his creation once more making the sky literally the limit. Running on the momentum of Cinematic Titanic along with his association with SHOUT! Factory and their home media releases of MST3K (and their awesome Turkey Day reruns every Thanksgiving), the additional reruns appearing on Netflix and their Youtube Channel, and a successful Kickstarter campaign, Joel has been able to do what no one could - bring MST3K back after 16 very long years!

MST3K - The New Cast

Fourteen episodes start tomorrow (Friday, March 14th) on Netflix with Felicia Day (as Kinga Forrester) and Patton Oswalt (her henchman Max) starring along side the latest resident of the Satellite of Love, Jonah Ray (playing Jonah Heston). Yes, the bots are back, but with new comedians helming the controls with Hampton Yount (Crow), Baron Vaughn (Servo), and Rebecca Hanson (alum of Second City) who will be the first female comedian playing Gypsy to join the crew.  Special guest appearances from Pehl, Corbett, and Murphy reprising their roles as Pearl, Professor Bobo, and Brain Guy have been announced along with more surprises along the way.

If you’ve never seen an episode and have a Netflix subscription, now’s your chance to join in on the fun as new episodes of Mystery Science Theater start tomorrow. Once you’ve binged those, you can also catch some of the classic MST3K’s as well both on Netflix and the MST3K Youtube Channel!  Until next time...

Check out the trailer below!

Marvel's Luke Cage (2016 Trailer / Marvel Comics / Netflix)

Luke Cage (aka Power Man) was created in 1972 by Archie Goodwin, John Romita Sr., and George Tuska in Luke Cage, Hero For Hire. Luke Cage is the third Marvel series to hit Netflix since the widely praised Daredevil in 2015 (with a second season that debuted earlier this year) and equally formidable Jessica Jones in 2015. If the first two Marvel series are any indication of what we can expect with this latest entry, then Luke Cage is sure to be a hit with Marvel fans as the collected characters edge their way towards the Marvel team-up series The Defenders, that is positioned to debut in 2017.

You can begin the binge watch of Mavel's Luke Cage as it starts tomorrow, September 30th on Netflix!

All hail the king baby! This Halloween we all get tricks and treats brought to you exclusively from Bruce Campbell (aka Ash Williams) and his best bud and director, Sam Raimi as Ash vs. Evil Dead premieres tonight at 9pm on STARZ! Check out the trailer below!

Ash Vs. Evil Dead (2015 Trailer / Starz)

The Evil Dead movies began back in 1981 when high school buddies, Campbell and Raimi got together to create what has become one of the most beloved horror franchises in history. It spawned two direct sequels (Evil Dead 2 in 1987 and Army of Darkness in 1992) and a reboot in 2013 directed by Fede Alvarez.

To say the gang here at Pittsburgh Underground our Evil Dead fiends would be an understatement. We've waited twenty three long years to find out how Ash Williams returned to our present from the mess he found himself in at the end of Army of Darkness. Check out some of the stuff we had to say about the entire franchise in the second half our our PU Podcast (right at the 10:20 mark).

Tits For Telly: Supergirl STARTS TONIGHT!

Look up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Superman’s cousin! That’s right gang - tonight at 8pm on CBS, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl will be soaring onto television screens with Melissa Benoist in the title role. Check out the trailer below!

Supergirl (2015 Trailer / DC Comics / CBS)

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a live action version of Clark Kent’s cousin in action, the last being Laura Vandervoort on Smalleville, and Helen Slater before her in the 1984 movie of the same title. Ms. Slater now plays Eliza Danvers (Kara’s adoptive mother) along with Dean Cain (from The New Adventures of Lois and Clark) as her adoptive father Jeremiah Danvers.

Produced by Flash / Arrow alum Greg Berlanti & Andrew Kreisberg, it looks like there will be lots of easter eggs for fans of the DC Comic in this show including Peter Facinelli as Max Lord, Brit Morgan as Livewire, Jeremy Jordan as Winslow Scott aka Toyman, Chris Browning as Reactron, Justice Leak as Hellgrammite.

Other characters to appear include Red Tornado, T.O. Morrow (Flash villain, responsible for the creation of Red Tornado), Sam Lane, and NON (the mute, 1/3 of the 3 Kryptonian villains.

And yes, that is Harrison Ford's wife, Calista Flockhart playing Cat Grant (another character from the comics, previously played by Tracy Scroggins on The New Adventures of Lois and Clark). Looks like lots of high flying adventure for this version of Supergirl - we can’t wait to see what’s she’s made of!

Pittsburgh Underground had a bunch to say about Supergirl in our 2nd Episode of the PU Podcast (right at the 26:08 mark) so check it out for some more info on the show! Supergirl premieres tonight at 8pm on CBS.

Tits For Telly / The Flash - Season 2 STARTS TONIGHT!!!

It’s finally back! The Flash / Season 2 starts tonight at 8PM on the CW! Last year, Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and the gang from Central City left us on a cliff hanger as the timeline started unraveling with the apparent death of Eddie Thawne (Rick Cosnett) by his own hand in order to destroy his ‘distant’ relative, the Reverse Flash / Eobard Thawne (played by both Tom Cavanagh and the body swapping Matt Letscher). Not only did this open up a vortex in the space-time continuum that began to swallow the city, but our hero was last seen speeding through it’s eye. Check out the tail end of last seasons finale!

The Flash / Season 1 Finale Clip (2015 / DC Comics / CW)

If that wasn’t awesome enough, Jay Garrick’s helmet popped out of the rift (the golden age Flash), visions of the future - including Killer Frost aka Caitlin Snow (Danielle Panabaker),  Eddie Thawne was sucked into the rift itself, and we caught a glimpse of Hawkgirl (Ciara Renee) who will be appearing in the spin-off show, Legends of Tomorrow (shown in the above clip at the 1 minute mark).

For season 2, it’s anybody’s game - has the timeline changed now that Eddie Thawne effectively stopped Eobard from ever existing by making the ultimate sacrifice? Where did the rift take Eddie as he was swallowed up by the wormhole? Is Barry’s mother now alive now that the Reverse Flash was never around to kill her in the first place (also keeping his father safe from a murder conviction)? What’s changed between Barry and the West family who essentially adopted him after the murder of his mother? Could Dr. Wells not have suffered the horrific fate imposed on him and his wife by the Reverse Flash? Did the particle explosion ever happen now that the timeline has been altered? What does this mean for the villains that received their powers due to the explosion, let alone heroes like Firestorm and the Flash himself?

All we do know for sure is that Professor Zoom will make his first appearance as the big bad for season 2, voiced by Tony Todd. Check out the season 2 trailer below!

The Flash / Season 2 Trailer (2015 / DC Comics / CW)

This season will also introduce Jay Garrick (the golden age Flash, played by Teddy Sears) along with Wally West (the New 52 ‘version’, played by Keiynan Lonsdale) known not only as the nephew of Iris West (Candice Patton), but also ‘Kid Flash’ (who eventually takes up the mantel of The Flash after Barry’s heroic self-sacrifice / disappearance during Crisis on Infinite Earths).

The Flash was one of  Pittsburgh Underground’s favorite shows last season that never failed to satisfy on every level - great casting, inventive stories (written in part by our old pal Geoff Johns, Chief Creative Officer at DC Comics), and some of the best effects work on television today. For more on what we thought of The Flash / Season 1, check out our PU Podcast / Episode 2; The Fall TV Preview (right at the 15:05 mark).

The Flash / Season 2 speeds to the CW tonight at 8pm.

Tits For Telly: Marvels Agents of SHIELD / Season 3 Starts TONIGHT!

One of our favorite shows starts tonight at 8PM on ABC - Marvels Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. / Season 3. Check out the trailer below:

Marvels Agents of SHIELD / Episode 3 (2015 Trailer / Marvel / Disney)

Looks like our old pal Sky has finally accepted that she's actually Daisy Johnson aka Quake (from Inhumans lore - a big part of season 3). Coulson is in need of a new arm (his got lopped off in order to save his life last season), we still don't know what happened to Simmons (who got swallowed up by the big black goo), and what the hell is that beastie at the end of the trailer (maybe Raina?).

We talked a bit about the upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. season in our PU Podcast / Episode 2 - 2015 Fall TV Preview (at the 14:10 mark) and can't wait to go on new adventures with Agent Coulson and the entire gang! The fun starts tonight on ABC at 8pm!

Heroes Reborn (2015 Trailer / NBC)

The gang here at Pittsburgh Underground had a lot to say on our PU Podcast / Episode 2, The 2015 Fall TV Preview (roughly at the 7:50 mark). We will be cautiously watching as the Heroes saga continues tonight at 8pm on NBC.
