Artsy Fartsy: Rob Rogers Continues to Cartoon - Here's Where You Can Find Him!

Rob Rogers - Pittsburgh Political Cartoonist

For all of you folks who are missing your daily dose of Pittsburgh political cartoonist Rob Rogers - never fear! An agreement has been made between Rob Rogers’ syndication group and new alternative weekly, the Pittsburgh Current to begin running his cartoons.

This is great news for all of us who really rely on Rob’s amazing work to cheer us up in this day an age where comedy feels like it’s in short supply (unless count the hilarious state of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Rob Rogers’ former employer, who’s diminishing subscription rates keep plummeting on a daily basis - now that’s comedy)!

Far From the Border / Rob Rogers (Andrews McMeel Syndicate © 2018)

The Pittsburgh Current is both a print and online publication started by former Editor Charlie Deitch and former Marketing Director Bethany Ruhe of the Pittsburgh City Paper, both who had their own similar experiences of drama by their former employers due to their critical coverage of conservative candidates. You can read more about that story in an article by Pittsburgh Next.

Rob Rogers can also be supported on his own Patreon page with a number of ways that not only help Rob Rogers in his cartooning endeavors, but also provide all kinds of goodies to those that pony up a few dollars in order to keep the laughs coming.

Separated / Rob Rogers (Andrews McMeel Syndicate © 2018)

So don’t forget to check out the Pittsburgh Current,  Rob Rogers’ at Patreon, and as always at Rob Rogers.com for more fun from Pittsburgh’s greatest political cartoonist Rob Rogers.

Artsy Fartsy: The Ex-Wives Club 'Alimony Tour' FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY!!!

On Saturday, July 21st, The Ex-Wives Club - Alimony Tour will be performing at The Unplanned Comedy Warehouse (5601 Butler St, 2nd floor, Lawrenceville, Pittsburgh, PA. 15201) from at 8PM to 9:30 PM. Local comedy god,  Alex Stypula, will be hosting the lineup that includes: Kevin Tit, Max Wolfson, Yoki Danoff, Andrew Hall, and Pete Musto.

Tickets are $8.00 on-line or $10.00 at the door.

The Ex-Wives Club is an experimental comedy team from Washington, DC that blends formats, styles and perspectives into a dynamic concoction of razor-sharp wit and unique absurdities.

Now, for the first time ever, these five luminaries of stage and (computer) screen have decided to take their one-of-a-kind act on the road. In July 2017, they are traveling up and down the eastern seaboard to bring 90 minutes of electrifying stand up, sketch comedy and audience-interactive games to a few select cities at a time when this great nation of ours could use a good laugh or two.

Originally hailing from all over the United States, Kevin, Max, Yoki, Andrew and Pete all bonded over their love of cartoons, comic books, punk rock, hip hop and just goofing off in general. Rising stars of the DC comedy scene, they have donned stages across the country, and now they want to make a weird journey into their collective subconscious available to you!

With over 25 years of comedy experience between them, this new breed of buffoons and nutjobs has performed on the SeeSo network and at the DC Improv, Drafthouse Comedy Theater, Arlington Cinema Drafthouse, Laughing Skull Lounge, Cozzy’s Comedy Club, the Creek and the Cave, the New Movement Theater, Magooby’s Jokehouse, the Comedy Works, The Fest, Burning Bridges Comedy Festival, and the Charm City Comedy Festival.

Don’t risk missing them now, because the next time you see them might be broadcast to millions of other people around the world, or just getting booked next to you in county lock up!

Artsy Fartsy: Modern Map Art

Greetings once again to another Artsy Fartsy segment where we showcase artists of all types from around the Pennsylvania area. This time our featured artist Jennifer B with Modern Map Art.

Modern Map Art was founded in 2016 after Jennifer returned from her honeymoon where she was lucky enough to travel all over the world. With an appreciation for different cities, cultures, and a passion for cartography (the science and practice of drawing maps), she decided to take all that she had experienced to create her special brand of artwork.

In her own words Jennifer states that, “Since I was very young, I was passionate about maps -- atlases, vintage maps, street maps -- anything I could get my hands on. I loved seeing how the urban sprawl had developed over time, and how when you look from above the lines look like an organized chaos over the city which tells it's own story.

I started using city grids and imagery to put together with colors that represented that city to create posters and art that would look good in anyone's home or office. We started with cities we were familiar with here in the US and we're going to expand to cities all over the world. Our designs are elegant and modern, with a touch of nostalgia for anyone that has a connection to the city.”

Through her website, Modern Map Art, you can see that passion shine through as you browse through hundreds of maps from cities not only throughout the world, but also Pennsylvania favorites - Philadelphia, Carlisle, Bethlehem, Bloomsburg, Lewisburg, Allentown, Gettysburg, Camelback Ski Resort, Latrobe, and of course our favorite - Pittsburgh.

Modern Map Art / Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Map
24" x 36" Print / Black with Yellow Roads

Speaking of the steel city, Jennifer graciously sent us a 24" x 36" inch sample print of the city of Pittsburgh and we could not have been more impressed with in both design and quality of the final reproduction. Printed on thick 10.3mil paper with rich black and vibrant gold inks, it expertly represents an aerial depiction of Pittsburgh rarely viewed in an artistic way until now. Also, for anyone worried about the packaging that the artwork arrived in, don't worry - It showed up at our doorstep in a meaty poster tube, double wrapped inside to ensure it’s protection. Again, we can’t say enough nice things about the final product we received from Modern Map Art.

So if you love Pittsburgh and want a way to show it off to anyone who walks into your home, dorm, or office, then you will want to grab up one of these prints now! They come in five different sizes - 8” x 10”, 12” x 18”, 16” x 20”, 18” x 24”, and 24” x 36” starting at $29.99 (which includes all shipping and handling) and come in five different color variations of black, white, and gold depending on your tastes.

Also, if you love the art prints and want more you’re in luck as Modern Map Art also features 100% polyester throw pillows in varying sizes (all cut and sewn here in the USA) and polycarbonate phone cases as well, also in variant color stylings depending on your personal preferences!

Celebrating the 150th anniversary of Lewis Carroll's beloved book of the same name, The Rage of the Stage Players proudly announce the Pittsburgh return of their gritty, urban stage production, Alice's Adventures in “Wonderland,” featuring makeup designs by Ali Fleeman and Gwen Crew(Face Off season 7).

SYNOPSIS:
Alice, an innocent Catholic schoolgirl, is lured away from a field trip by a mischievous punk, the "White" Rabbit. She pursues him and finds herself in “Wonderland,” a seedy area of the city populated by a host of re-imagined, real-world counterparts to Carroll's beloved characters. Favorites such as the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, and the Queen of Hearts appear in Alice’s world, but not as audiences may expect—instead, we find a victim of Alzheimer's Disease, a drug addict with a smile that just won't quit, and a dominatrix with her own bondage club.

Having been produced from coast-to-coast and internationally, this marks the third time the play will be seen in Pittsburgh.

“Alice’s Adventures in ‘Wonderland’ is tailor made for the young, hip, adventurous wing of the Pittsburgh theater crowd.”
-- John Hayes, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Pittsburgh playwright James Michael Shoberg brings us a darker, modernized interpretation of Lewis Carroll's story about young Alice Liddell, "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" (1865). Although Shoberg's version is an edgier, more twisted adaptation of the story, Carroll's plot and poems remain intact. Fans of Carroll’s work will appreciate the numerous subtle references to characters and songs, as well as other hidden—and not-so-hidden—gems.

The fun starts this FRIDAY! Hope to see you there!

Artsy Fartsy: The Rage Of The Stage Players Seated Table Read of Winnie The Pooh & The Seven Deadly Sins THIS SUNDAY!!!

Joseph A Roots (Winnie-the-Pooh) and
Patrick "Max" Ferris (young Christopher Robin) /
The Rage of the Stage Players / Winnie-the-Pooh and the Seven Deadly Sins (2013)

Greeting’s one and all! Kicking off their 14th season as Pittsburgh's only dark fringe theatre company, The Rage of the Stage Players will be holding a "seated reading" of Pittsburgh playwright James Michael Shoberg's irreverent stage comedy, WINNIE-THE-POOH AND THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS, the fourth play in his "Twisted Fairy Tale" series. Want to know more about The Rage of the Stage Players? Check out this 2013 interview at 'Burgh Vivant with Brian Edward.

James Michael Shoberg of The Rage of The Stage
interviewed by Brian Edward of 'Burgh Vivant (2013)

Rage wanted to give fans, who might have missed their opportunity to see the show fully staged, an opportunity to hear it read and characterized by some of our very best actors---some of whom originated the roles themselves!

Carrie Jubilee as Piglet
The Rage of the Stage Players / Winnie-the-Pooh and the Seven Deadly Sins (2013)

The script, which premiered in March of 2013 (and featured jaw-dropping makeup designs by Ben Peter, a current contestant on Syfy's Face Off), tells the tale of a more jaded, sixteen-year-old Christopher Robin, who is coming to terms with his homosexuality. He soon finds that his seven year absence from the Hundred Acre Wood has had a disturbing effect on his imaginary friends who dwell within--Winnie-the-Pooh (Gluttony) has become morbidly obese and overtaken by diabetes; Piglet (Envy), always dissatisfied by his own life, covets the lives of all who surround him; Eeyore (Sloth) has a far bleaker outlook than ever before, leading to self-destructive tendencies; Tigger (Lust) never one to respect personal boundaries, has found that pouncing can lead to so much more; Rabbit (Greed), avaricious and paranoid, is desperate to protect all that is his; Owl (Pride), unaware of his problem drinking, continues to maintain an air of smug superiority over his fellow animals; and Kanga’s household is menaced by her now grown-up son, Roo (Wrath), an Australian kickboxer and violence-junkie.

The fun begins on Sunday, March 29th, 2015, at 3rd Street Gallery (220 3rd Street, Carnegie, Pennsylvania 15106) at 7:00 PM for ONE NIGHT ONLY!

Extremely limited seating! First come, first served! There will be a talkback with the playwright and cast afterward (time permitting). The reading is free, but we appreciate any small donations to support our fringe theatre work here in Pittsburgh.

*MATURE CONTENT AND EXPLICIT LANGUAGE!*

Admission is free, but we welcome any small donation you'd be willing to offer, to help support Rage's unique brand of local fringe theatre! Hope to see you there!

As always, you can also check out the Official Rage of the Stage Players Website or Facebook Page for more info!

Artsy Fartsy: Live Long And Prosper, Leonard Nimoy Passes at 83

Leonard Nimoy
(1931-2015)

Leonard Nimoy has passed. The sad news came Friday morning from his home in the Bel Air section of Los Angeles. He was 83. Confirmed by his wife Susan Bay Nimoy, saying the cause was end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Mr. Nimoy announced that he had the disease last year, attributing it to years of smoking, a habit he had given up three decades earlier. He had been hospitalized earlier in the week.

An artist, a poet, a photographer, and a musician (who could ever forget the Ballad of Bilbo Baggins!), his talents were vast and his legend gigantic, bringing us one of the most beloved characters in science fiction history to life in the form of Star Trek’s Mr. Spock. The words ‘live long and prosper; will forever echo in our minds as we remember this great artist in years to come.

Artsy Fartsy: Cartoonists SPEAK OUT for Charlie Hebdo

Rob Rogers / Cartoonist

Nothing will stop free speech. NOTHING. This could not be more than true as played out this week in the wake of the tragic shootings at the satirical French publication, Charlie Hebdo (click here to see our original article).

Cartoonists from across the globe are speaking out in their own unique ways, literally illustrating the absolute truth that you will never stop free speech or free thinking no matter what the cost.

Here is a small collection of cartoon's in response to the attacks, including, Pittsburgh's own Rob Roger's, editorial cartoonist for the Pittsburgh Post Gazette (at the typy-top of this article).

We commend all these wonderful artists for their contributions to free speech. Je Suis Charlie!!!

Artsy Fartsy: Rage of the Stage Players Present HOOKED! This SUNDAY!

Hey gang! Looking for something FREE to do this Sunday evening? If you saw and enjoyed "OLIVER TWISTED," come hear its companion piece, whose events take place simultaneously!

Continuing the celebration of our landmark 13th season as Pittsburgh's only dark fringe theatre company, The Rage of the Stage Players will be holding a "seated reading" of Pittsburgh playwright James Michael Shoberg's HOOKED (inspired by the novel "Peter and Wendy by J. M. Barrie), the third play in his "Twisted Fairy Tale" series.

Rage wanted to give fans, who might have missed their opportunity to see the show fully staged, an opportunity to hear it read and characterized by some of our very best actors--both current, and from years past--some of whom originated the roles themselves onstage!

This script, which premiered in October of 2012, is a grim, violent twist on J. M. Barrie’s novel, "Peter and Wendy," set in London's bleak future. The very worst of it--"Old London"--is overwrought with crime and drugs, and societal decay has left the district a ruined husk of what it once was. When an injured young punk, referring to himself only as "Pan," crosses paths with a girl named Wendy Darling, she and her two brothers, John and Michael, are drawn deep into the heart of Old London, where even the junkies, prostitutes, gangs, and piratical thugs have something to fear--a hideously disfigured drug lord named James, better known on the streets as "Hook."

Featuring the talents of (in order of appearance): Patrick Ferris, Robert Kowalewski, Vincent Marshall, Carrie Jubilee, Nikki Nader, Devin Hunt, Jeremy Enz-Doerschner, Roy J Gloeckl II, Christopher Castaneda, Brian Seymour, Vincent Bombara, Jeff Gettemy, Alyssa Herron, Joseph Stammerjohn, Rachel Carey, Sean Gallaher, Lily Van Sixx, Bethany Meisberger, Amara O'Donnell Neligh, and James Michael Shoberg.

The fun begins on Sunday, (Sunday, October 26th, 2014) at Off The Wall Theater - Pittsburgh Theater Rental (25 W Main St, Carnegie, Pennsylvania 15106) FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY! First come, first served seating! There will be a talkback with the playwright and cast afterward (time permitting).

Admission is free, but we welcome any small donation you'd be willing to offer, to help support Rage's unique brand of local fringe theatre! Hope to see you there!

Artsy Fartsy: H.R. Giger Tribute

H.R. Giger
(1940-2014)

Some sad news this week as we have lost another of the great masters - H.R. Giger, the Swiss surrealist painter, sculptor, and set designer, best known for his Academy Award winning achievement for visual effects for his creation of the ‘Xenomorph’ Alien in the sci-fi classic Alien died this last Sunday from complications sustained from a fall. He was 74.

Xenomorph Alien
H.R. Giger

Widely known for his biomechanical surrealistic paintings, Hans Rudolf ‘Ruedi’ Giger, he started off as most great artists do - with a father urging him to follow the blandest path imaginable (the pharmacy biz), only to choose industrial design at the School of Applied Arts in Zurich.

Set in the Ozlin Center, a facility for the mentally ill, "DOROTHY IN OZ" follows the story of a bi-polar Dorothy "Dottie" Gale (Adrienne Fischer), who is involuntarily committed by her Aunt Em (Renee Cuerden) and Uncle Henry. While hospitalized, she is treated with Cyclozil, an experimental drug, which causes her to hallucinate a dark, twisted version of the hospital simply called--"Oz." While in her drug-induced delirium, Dottie encounters Glinda (Carrie Jubilee), a somewhat unhinged therapist, who informs Dottie that her only chance to be released is to seek the hospital’s mysterious administrator--The "Great Oz" (Matthew Grimm), himself. Thus begins her trip through a veritable madhouse, where she is joined by "Skarekrow" (Nick Kempen), a heroin-addicted goth-rocker; Rusty (Joseph Stammerjohn), a pierced, ax-wielding biker with severe anger issues; and Mr. Lyons (Joseph A Roots), a sexually frustrated deviant searching for a prescription to give him a little "courage" below the belt. However, if coping with her three new companions wasn’t difficult enough, Dottie unwittingly attracts the attention of the Wicked Witch of the West Wing (Jen James), a crazed doctor who sends her three cronies (Brian Seymour, Devin Hunt, and Gered Duke), each the subject of one of her deranged experiments, to capture Dottie for her own depraved purposes.
