Artsy Fartsy: The Nervous One - PU Poetry by Yerz Trooley

The Nervous One
Shemp always was the nervous one of those three Howard brothers
Along with help from Mr. Fine, all sons of Jewish mothers.
We knew that Shemp was gearing up for some hard luck affair
When in his face the strands would fall of long, black greasy hair.

His beady eyes would peer out from beneath a dark chapeau
With just a trace of a thin smile that seemed so apropos.
His cheap striped suit and tacky tie made him look a normal fellow
Until that nervous tick appeared which turned his knees to jello.

Who knew he'd been the first real Stooge, preceding Moe and Larry
But left to join another act and dumped that shnook Ted Healy.
Moe called their brother Curly to leave home and join the crew
Plus Larry Fine (hey porcupine!) and Shemp bid them adieu.

When Curly had to leave the act, his brother Shemp replaced him
And forged his own identity amidst the Stooges mayhem.
His hands and voice would shake and crack, he'd throw a frantic glance,
Then throw a pie and poke an eye and sing a song of six pants.

Then late one night while out with friends, while leaving a horse race
He left us suddenly one night, a smile upon his face.
His repertoire of wacky shtick that had him all undone
Leaves us the comic legacy of Shemp the nervous one.

Tits of Telly: Stargate Revisited

Those of you who love ‘Gate respond, “OK, the movie or the series and which franchise?” Down boys and girls. We’ll get there.

A year or so ago, the hubby and I decided to watch the entire run of both Stargate SG-1 (11-year run) and Stargate Atlantis (5-year run), in order as they were meant to be seen, commercial-free courtesy of our Netflix subscription. Yes, it took months and was well worth the time spent. The resulting couch impressions are permanent.

How much better does episodic, serialized (mostly) TV get than Stargate? Characters that became more endearing over time….smart, funny writing, delicious plot twists, tremendous production value, all good things that left us wishing that it would all never, ever end. I pose these musings to those who care about Stargate just as much.

Artsy Fartsy: The No Name Players Present Orange Flower Water THIS FRIDAY!!!

The No Name Players present Orange Flower Water

Underground theater season is upon us again once more and with that comes one of the BEST underground theater troupes in Pittsburgh - The No Name Players! Starting this Friday, June 29th and running through the July 14th, The No Name Players present Orange Flower Water at the PITT Studio Theater in the Cathedral of Learning in the Oakland section of the city.

Feature Robin Abramson*, Tressa Glover*, Mike Mihm, and Ricardo Vila-Roger, Orange Flower Water's story centers around main characters Beth and David who after realizing they are married to the wrong people begin having an affair. The story that follows is a searing portrait of the yearning to feel loved and the heartache and consequences that infidelity brings. The Pittsburgh premiere of this emotionally raw and complex work by Craig Wright (Six Feet Under, Mistakes Were Made, Recent Tragic Events) will be directed by Steven Wilson, a Pittsburgh native and Artistic Associate at the acclaimed A Red Orchid Theatre in Chicago.

Orange Flower Water has been dubbed by the Chicago Sun-Times as “a brutally honest drama about marriage and infidelity…it is at once fiercely adult, shrewdly observant, often painfully graphic and most definitely not for the meek.”

The show starts at 8PM (with no late seating). Tickets can be purchased at the Showclix Website for $15.00 or for $20.00 at the door. Student tickets are $10.00 cash at the door with a valid ID. For more information, check out The No Name Players Official Website or on Facebook.

For those of you who don't know where the Cathedral of Learning is, click here for a MAP. I suggest parking at the Soldiers and Sailors garage here. Once you get in the main entrance of the Cathedral of Learning, just go to elevators “E’ or “G” to level B (that's the basement). The theatre will be down the hall on your left.

The No Name Players are one of the most talented acting troupes in the city of Pittsburgh and a must see for those who love live theater. Hope to see you there!

Movies That Have Everything Preview: Brave

It's a double feature Friday gang! With that comes the thirteenth animated feature from the gang at Pixar, BRAVE directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, and produced by Katherine Sarafian. Check out the trailer!
BRAVE (2012 Trailer)

Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. InBrave, a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts. Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson).

Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Witch (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish.

The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late.

Anything Pixar does, PU will watch! Pixar has kept Disney relevant in the world of animated features and always deserve a visit to the theater when they bring us something new and wonderful to experience. Are you brave enough to join PU this weekend at the theater? Hope to see you there!

Movies That Have Everything: THE THREE: A Scott Goldberg Concept Film

Pittsburgh Underground is always proud to showcase independent artists with the vision and hootspa to bring their labors of love to life for all to enjoy. This week we were very fortunate to come across such an artist, Scott Goldberg and his concept film THE THREE, filmed on location in the Wampum Mines (known by horror buffs as the set for George Romaro's Day of the Dead) and featuring Day of the Dead star and local legend, Lori Cardille and actor John Amplas. Check out this fantastic footage!

THE THREE: A Scott Goldberg Concept Film

You may have also noticed a familar sight outside the Pennsylvanian on Liberty Avenue - our fare city strikes yet again on the big screen!

In 2010, award-winning filmmaker Scott Goldberg had an idea for a dark, depressing horror film with a serious tone that took place in absolute seclusion. In order to raise funds for the feature length version, Scott set out to make that dream a reality by self-funding and shooting a concept to show potential investors the tone and feeling of the type of movie that he wanted to bring back to the horror genre: DARK HORROR.

Goldberg explains on his website, "The problem with the last two decades of horror films is that a lot of them have been copying what's been done before - the same generic formula, which is usually the catalyst for a ineffective and non-frightening horror film. We felt the need to come up with a concept that not only rejected the cliche aspect of horror films, but take it in a unique new direction".

This is the type of independent film making that gets the gang here at good ol' PU excited!!! If you feel the same way, Scott is looking for interested parties to invest in his vision. Check out more information on THE THREE Official Website.

Artsy Fartsy: Maurice Sendak Birthday Tribute

Maurice Sendak (1928-2012)

Today we pay solemn respect to yet another fallen master of the arts and, a great personal hero to those of us here at Pittsburgh Underground.

Earlier this year we mourned the loss of French comic master Jean “Mobieus” Girard.  and now, as many of you may have already heard, children’s book artist and writer, creator of Where The Wild Things Are, winner of the prestigious Caldecott Award (the Nobel Prize of Children’s books) and cantankerous old fart, Maurice Sendak, died early in May of this year from complications cause by a stroke.  He was 83.  He revolutionized the genre of children’s books and storytelling, and was a giant in the medium.  His works have inspired children and adults for decades and he had a profound influence on artists and writers around the world.

Where The Wild Things Are (1963)

Some of you may ask why we have waited so long to acknowledge so important and personal a figure. It so happens that PU’s very own cantankerous old fart, Hot Toddy, shares a birthday with Mr. Sendak.  It seemed right to wait so we could honor both, let us wish a very happy birthday and say good-bye to Mr. Sendak.  And as for Hot Toddy , well…

Greetings earthlings! It's time again for another FREE PU Pulp Poster EXCLUSIVELY here at Pittsburgh Underground brought to you by yours truly, Hot Toddy!

Coincidentally (or not, depending on what side of the screen you're on), today also marks the anniversary of the day I stepped forth upon this big blue marble, pencil in hand with bad ideas a brewin', bubblin', and a troublin' whomever was lucky enough to get pulled into the black hole of my soul. With that said, my present to all our PU fans comes by way of Whiff of the Weird / Issue Two / Invasion of the Southside Space Sirens!

Now that I'm a year older and 'wiser', I've come to realize that when it comes to what you want in life you can sit around wishin' or you can do your own fishin' - you might just catch that big dipper, make your rainbow connection, or find that four leaf clover you've been dreaming about, but only YOU can make
that happen.  For example, I wanted a gorgeous green girl for my birthday so, I made one, however, I'm always up for auditioning the real deal if there are any takers out there!

So today my wish for all our PU viewers out there is to seize the universe and bend it to your will (it's what it's there for)!!! Don't forget to check back with Pittsburgh Underground for more ridiculousness rocketing your way all summer long!!!

UPDATE: This PU Pulp Poster has been UPDATED as of August 3rd, 2012 to include revisions to our QR Code and Website Address - PUzine.com -  Download and print this PU Freebie and hang it on your fridge, stick it to your skateboard, glue it to your little sister's head - THEN use your smartphone to scan the code to follow Pittsburgh Underground wherever you are!
