Movies That Have Everything: Ant-Man Starts FRIDAY!!!
It’s finally here! Marvel’s long gestating Ant-Man is finally making it’s way to the big screen starting THIS FRIDAY!!!
The screenplay by Edgar Wright, Joe Cornish, Adam McKay, and Paul Rudd (who also stars as Scott Lang aka, the second character to take on the Ant-Man title) was originally going to be directed by Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, The World’s End), but left the film after years of work due to creative differences with the studio. Now directed by Peyton Reed, the film also stars Michael Douglas (aka Hank Pym, the original Ant-Man), Evangeline Lilly (Hope van Dyne), and Cory Stoll (Darren Cross / Yellow Jacket). Check out the trailer!
For those of you who aren’t familiar with Ant-Man, he (that is, the original Ant-Man, Hank Pym) was created in 1962 by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby for the comic Tales to Astonish. Hank Pym discovered the ‘Pym Particle’ which allowed him to alter his size.
Along with his girlrfriend, Janet van Dyne (aka The Wasp), they both became founding members of the Avengers. Hank Pym was the true creator of Ultron (who’s origin was rewritten for this year’s Avengers: Age of Ultron) and eventually adopted other personas in his illustrious career including Giant-Man (yes, not only could he shrink, but he could grow as well!), Goliath, and Yellow Jacket (who’s mantle has been taken on by other characters in the Marvel Universe as both a hero and villain).
Along with Pym’s helmet to control ants he fought the good fight for years until Scott Lang, the second character in the Marvel Universe took on the guise of the hero. Scott Lang was a thief who stole the original Ant-Man costume in order to save his dying daughter Cassandra from a heart condition. Hank helped Scott reform his life and has worked along side both the Fantastic Four and The Avengers.
There were still two more characters to take up the Ant-Man persona including that of Eric O’Grady and Chris McCarthy - two low level S.H.I.E.L.D. agents who had their own drama with the suit with one ending up dead (McCarthy) and the other taking the suit off his dead corpse. Eventually, O’Grady perishes after a rather dubious stint as the Ant-Man, protecting a child from the villain known as ‘The Father’. (doubtful if we’ll ever see either of these short lived incarnations of Ant-Man).
The gang at good ol’ PU has had ants in our pants for this latest edition into the Marvel Cinematic Universe ever since it’s announcement almost two years ago! So fly down to your local theater as Ant-Man finally starts tomorrow!

Celebrating the 150th anniversary of Lewis Carroll's beloved book of the same name, The Rage of the Stage Players proudly announce the Pittsburgh return of their gritty, urban stage production, Alice's Adventures in “Wonderland,” featuring makeup designs by Ali Fleeman and Gwen Crew(Face Off season 7).
SYNOPSIS:
Alice, an innocent Catholic schoolgirl, is lured away from a field trip by a mischievous punk, the "White" Rabbit. She pursues him and finds herself in “Wonderland,” a seedy area of the city populated by a host of re-imagined, real-world counterparts to Carroll's beloved characters. Favorites such as the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, and the Queen of Hearts appear in Alice’s world, but not as audiences may expect—instead, we find a victim of Alzheimer's Disease, a drug addict with a smile that just won't quit, and a dominatrix with her own bondage club.
Having been produced from coast-to-coast and internationally, this marks the third time the play will be seen in Pittsburgh.
“Alice’s Adventures in ‘Wonderland’ is tailor made for the young, hip, adventurous wing of the Pittsburgh theater crowd.”
-- John Hayes, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Pittsburgh playwright James Michael Shoberg brings us a darker, modernized interpretation of Lewis Carroll's story about young Alice Liddell, "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" (1865). Although Shoberg's version is an edgier, more twisted adaptation of the story, Carroll's plot and poems remain intact. Fans of Carroll’s work will appreciate the numerous subtle references to characters and songs, as well as other hidden—and not-so-hidden—gems.
The fun starts this FRIDAY! Hope to see you there!
