Artsy Fartsy: Rage of the Stage Players Present HOOKED! This SUNDAY!

Hey gang! Looking for something FREE to do this Sunday evening? If you saw and enjoyed "OLIVER TWISTED," come hear its companion piece, whose events take place simultaneously!

Continuing the celebration of our landmark 13th season as Pittsburgh's only dark fringe theatre company, The Rage of the Stage Players will be holding a "seated reading" of Pittsburgh playwright James Michael Shoberg's HOOKED (inspired by the novel "Peter and Wendy by J. M. Barrie), the third play in his "Twisted Fairy Tale" series.

Rage wanted to give fans, who might have missed their opportunity to see the show fully staged, an opportunity to hear it read and characterized by some of our very best actors--both current, and from years past--some of whom originated the roles themselves onstage!

This script, which premiered in October of 2012, is a grim, violent twist on J. M. Barrie’s novel, "Peter and Wendy," set in London's bleak future. The very worst of it--"Old London"--is overwrought with crime and drugs, and societal decay has left the district a ruined husk of what it once was. When an injured young punk, referring to himself only as "Pan," crosses paths with a girl named Wendy Darling, she and her two brothers, John and Michael, are drawn deep into the heart of Old London, where even the junkies, prostitutes, gangs, and piratical thugs have something to fear--a hideously disfigured drug lord named James, better known on the streets as "Hook."

Featuring the talents of (in order of appearance): Patrick Ferris, Robert Kowalewski, Vincent Marshall, Carrie Jubilee, Nikki Nader, Devin Hunt, Jeremy Enz-Doerschner, Roy J Gloeckl II, Christopher Castaneda, Brian Seymour, Vincent Bombara, Jeff Gettemy, Alyssa Herron, Joseph Stammerjohn, Rachel Carey, Sean Gallaher, Lily Van Sixx, Bethany Meisberger, Amara O'Donnell Neligh, and James Michael Shoberg.

The fun begins on Sunday, (Sunday, October 26th, 2014) at Off The Wall Theater - Pittsburgh Theater Rental (25 W Main St, Carnegie, Pennsylvania 15106) FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY! First come, first served seating! There will be a talkback with the playwright and cast afterward (time permitting).

Admission is free, but we welcome any small donation you'd be willing to offer, to help support Rage's unique brand of local fringe theatre! Hope to see you there!

Movies That Have Everything: Special Screening of Tales of Poe Screening THIS FRIDAY!!!

Do you hear it? As of someone gently rapping, rapping at your chamber door?

A very special one night only screening of the award winning film, Tales of Poe will be premiering  this Friday, October 10, 2014 at The Hollywood Theater (1449 Potomac Ave., Dormont, PA / 412 563 0368).

Doors will open at 7 PM with screening at 7:30 PM.  Admission is $8 for adults and $6 for seniors and students with ID.  Tickets may be purchased in advance at Showclix or or at the door. Check out the trailer below!

Tales of Poe
(2014 Trailer / Mastropiece Productions & SouthPaw Pictures)

This will be the first theatrical screening of Tales of Poe on the East Coast.  The world premiere of the film was held at Grauman’s Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, CA in August 2014.

Based on the classic works of Edgar Allan Poe, directors Bart Mastronardi and Alan Rowe Kelly have assembled an award-winning cast and crew in Tales of Poe.  A unique new spin on three of Poe’s popular stories (The Tell Tale Heart, The Cask of Amontillado and Dreams), Mastronadi and Kelly weave together a compelling and suspenseful anthology that will captivate Poe enthusiasts and horror fans alike.

The anthology boasts a cast of genre greats that includes Adrienne King, Amy Steel, Caroline Williams, Debbie Rochon, Lesleh Donaldson, Randy Jones, Desiree Gould, Brewster McCall, Alan Rowe Kelly, Bette Cassatt and Cartier Williams.   The film was written by Kelly, Mastronardi and former Pittsburgh resident Michael Varrati.

Director Alan Rowe Kelly, along with actress Bette Cassat co-executive producers Amy Lynn Best and Mike Watt (both of whom appear in the film segment The Tell Tale Heart), will be on hand to meet and greet fans before the screening.  There will be a brief Q&A session following the film.

Tales of Poe represents true independent filmmaking.  Following three years of production, the producers have assembled a dream cast, designed sets and costumes, and adapted their screenplays from a master story-teller.  With financial support coming mainly through crowd funding campaigns, the filmmakers were able to maintain the film's artistic integrity and complete it on their own terms and agreements.

The film has won numerous festival awards, including:
  • Best of Festival/Special award at the 2013 Hot Springs Horror Film Festival (The Tell Tale Heart)
  • Best Actress (Rochon), Best Actor (Kelly) and  Audience Choice (The Tell Tale Heart) at the 2012 Macabre Faire Horror Film Festival in Long Island, NY
  • Best Actress (Rochon), Best Cinematography (Dominick Sivilli), Best Director (Mastronardi) at the 2012 Terror Film Festival, an online international film competition
Some of the many reviews of Tales of Poe include:

“Something very special to the horror genre…both beautiful and horrifying.”  Hacked in the Head

“Intensely creative”  Angry Princess Slashes

“An absolute MUST see. A gift to fans of the Master works by Poe.” Horror Nation

“A classic tale with a contemporary twist - a surreal example of gothic horror. Outstanding performances and a testament to the craft.”  The Daily Grindhouse

“Tales of Poe gives this whole outing the organdy visual flair of Corman’s earlier Poe efforts mixed with a dash of Hammer’s (more violent) latter years. The sheen of grizzly humor is grand.”  Big Gay Horror Fan

“Full of visuals ranging from beautiful and lush to nightmare-like to macabre, Tales of Poe is the first great screen adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe this century.”  MoreHorror.com

“Breathtaking in its beauty. One of the best indie horror anthology films that I have ever seen. The best work (so far) of two of the hardest working and talented mofos in independent horror cinema. Takes the work of a master and puts it into the hands of two of the finest modern craftsmen in the field.” Halloween Forevermore

“An artistic experience rarely found in horror films, I believe Poe himself would have enjoyed. TALES OF POE takes classic American literature and treats it with artistic vision and first-class production values. Loud and disorienting - gory and colorful - beautiful and sad, all at once.”  Horror House Party

“One helluva creepy, claustrophobic, and bat-shit crazy atmosphere from the very first frame. “ AnythingHorror

“Poe gets modernized adaptations worthy of his grisly legacy. Seriously, this is how you bring the brilliance of Poe into the modern age.”  Boys, Bears & Scares

Remember gang - this is a one night only event! To learn more about the film, visit the Official Tales of Poe Website and as always, don't forget to check out the Official Hollywood Theater Website for this and other great events as we scare through the Halloween season!

The Hollywood Theater has embraced and supported independent films, including those in the horror genre, since opening under new management as a non-profit community theater in May 2011.  In partnership with Horror Realm, Pittsburgh’s modern horror convention (www.horrorrealmcon.com), the theater has offered opportunities for independent horror filmmakers to show their work on the “big screen” in a welcoming and affordable manner.  The venue is a non-profit 280-seat single screen theater located at 1449 Potomac Avenue in Dormont, just a few miles south of downtown Pittsburgh.  The theater features repertory and independent films as well as special events such as art shows and fundraisers.  Contact the theater at 412-563-0368 or www.thehollywooddormont.org for details on upcoming shows or to rent the theater for your party or event.

Announcement: Pittsburgh ZombieFest 2014 THIS SATURDAY!!!

Greetings once again gang! Our favorite month is finally upon us and with that comes the annual Pittsburgh Zombiefest sponsored by The It’s Alive Show and Straub Beer. Check out this little video from last year's event!

Zombiefest 2013 (video credit: John Kirch)

The fun begins this Saturday, October 11th from 12PM to 10PM, this time at the David Lawrence Convention Center (1000 Fort Duquesne Blvd Pittsburgh, PA 15222). The all-day undead extravaganza returns with the area's best bands, vendors, and zombie activities with many surprises in store.

New for this year - Zombie Dance Party and Dance Contest. Food and Straub Beer will be sold at this year's event along with all the craziest merchandise. Come in your best zombie make-up or new for this year, cosplay as a survivor.

Also -  Zombie Hunters are welcome this year. Come as your favorite character from AMC's The Walking Dead! We will be assembling cast look-alikes for a segment on The It's Alive Show. Walkers welcome!

Sadly, this is no longer a free event and will cost $12.00 for adults and $5.00 for kids (children under 5 get in for free).

*Parental Advisory: Due to the graphic nature of the costumes and make up, Zombiefest is a "PG13" event. Zombiefest typically has attendees in make up gorier than the scariest horror films. The bands are loud, sexy costumes can be revealing, and beer will served at the event. In other words, it's awesome.

Also, no functional or dangerous weapons and no containers of fake (or real) blood will be allowed at Zombiefest. No dripping costumes.

One great thing that hasn’t changed is that this is all for a worthy cause as well - The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank will be accepting non-perishable donations so don’t forget to bring some spare canned goods to help feed the living.

As always, more details can be obtained through the Official Pittsburgh Zombiefest Website. Hope to see you there!

Tits For Telly: The FLASH Starts TONIGHT on the CW!

It’s full speed ahead as The Flash FINALLY makes it’s television debut tonight at 8pm on the CW. The gang here at Pittsburgh Underground are total Flash fiends and have been sitting on pins and needles in anticipation of the Arrow spinoff. Check out the trailer!

The Flash (2014 Trailer / CW / DC Comics / Warner Bros.)

In this incarnation, Grant Gustin takes on the role as the scarlet speedster with Candice Patton as his main squeeze (or at least in the comics) Iris West. Tom Cavanagh (Ed, Scrubs) and Danielle Panabaker (Sky High) join the cast as two of our S.T.A.R. Labs scientists along with confirmed rumors that our Flash from the past (John Wesley Shipp) will be in on the fun as Barry Allen’s dad, Henry Allen and Amanda Pays returning to her role as Dr. Tina McGee in a future episode or two (an interesting twist for fans of The Flash series that ran between 1990 and 1991 - we can’t wait to see how they explain Dr. McGee’s existence in this new Flash universe!).

And yes - it does look like the Weather Wizard (or at least in this version, his brother, Clyde Mardon played by Chad Rook from Supernatural) is tonight's first big baddy that Barry will battle toe to toe with.

So get ready, get set, and GO, GO, GO for the pilot starting tonight at 8pm on the CW!

BONUS! Never seen the short lived CBS Flash Series of the 1990's? Check out this awesome opener starring John Wesley Shipp and Amanda Pays!
