Artsy Fartsy: Art All Night 2012 THIS WEEKEND!!!

Art All Night Lawrenceville is celebrating its 15th year. From Saturday, April 28th at 4PM through Sunday, April 29th at 2PM, Art All Night 2012 makes its home in the Willow Street Development at 4001 Willow Street, located at the corner of Willow and 40th Street.

Admission is FREE and the event is open to the public.  In the 15 years since its inception, Art All Night has become one of Pittsburgh’s most popular arts events. The roving event that hosted 1,240 artists, 36 performances, and 12,000+ attendees last year may be unrecognizable from the small, intimate exhibit of 101 artists and 200 attendees in 1998, but the core values remain the same: No Fees, No Jury, No Censorship. Each artist may submit one—and only ONE—piece of artwork, about any subject, in any medium. The show offers artists of any skill level or experience to showcase their work. First-timers and professionals hang up their artwork side by side. Drawings, paintings, sculptures… every medium has a place at Art All Night. Art All Night continues its grassroots tradition 15 years after it was first established; it’s organized by an all-volunteer committee, aided by hundreds of additional volunteers who help prepare the venue, clean up afterward, and do all the things in-between. Volunteers register the art pieces, hang them, man the retail tables, lead the children’s activities and create the on-site art. The online volunteer signup page is up and running for those who would like to help out with the event.

Art All Night 2012 hopes to take advantage of the 50,000 square feet of the Willow Street Development with even more art pieces, performances and patrons. There will be several designated areas housing bands, dance troupes, theater performances, and more!  Check out the Events Schedule for more info.

In addition to the art on exhibit, patrons will also have the opportunity to witness artwork being produced right before their eyes. Volunteer artists have been paired to meld their styles into collaborative paintings throughout the event. New to Art All Night’s live art this year is Cartooning All-Night, a homage to 24 Hour Comics Day. Artists are scheduled in hour-long time slots to start and complete one page of a comic. Some artists have committed to be there for the entire 22-hour event.

Because of last year’s success, the children’s activities this year are preparing for an even bigger turnout than last year, providing arts and crafts activities on Saturday from 4PM – 8PM and again on Sunday from 10AM – 2PM. Saturday’s events include a Reuse-a-Palooza arranged by Pittsburgh’s Center for Creative Reuse, as well as activities hosted by the Pittsburgh Glass Center
