Geek Gear: Back To The Future Auto-Lacing Shoes!

Gotta Get Back In Time...

The gang here at good ol' PU can't get enough gear from one of our favorite trilogies: Back to the Future. When the second movie in the series debuted back in 1989, our heroes Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and Dr. Emmet Brown (Christopher Lloyd) immediately visit the year 2015 to stop his son, Marty McFly Jr., from getting involved in a crime with Biff Tannen's grandson, Griff, that ultimately sends the McFly family into a downward spiral.

As Mary McFly Senior impersonates his future son, one of the many 'future' fashions that he wears are shoes with auto-laces that tighten as soon as he places his foot inside them. Well, with 2015 only a mere five years away (how time McFlys!), the future is NOW!

Blake Blevin, the brains behind this tech, hooked a micro-controller on to the back of a pair of sneakers. Granted, even she states that the design is 'a little bulky' and more 'proof of concept', but the effect is still a lot of fun to watch! For a little more info, check out the Instructables article and the video below.

Who knows, in a few years and a few more prototypes, maybe Nike will make this concept a reality!
